The famous folk-rock duo Simon & Garfunkel often uses the theremin instrument in the music interlude in one of their two signature songs, 'The Boxer'.
As for 'strange' instruments'? Try the musical break at 1:40 onwards in the duo's live performance of 'the happiest song in the world'.
